The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the option to question specific decisions made by the official, echoing the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move comes just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
